I USED TO PUNCH MY CURVES DOWN
I remember being 11 years old and my –ahem—assets developing early. I would stand in front of the mirror before school and punch them down to make them flatter. I was an 11 year old Indian girl whose body was changing in a school of all white children in Central Pennsylvania. My standards of beauty were taller than me, blonder than me, and built like laundry chutes. Nobody had these curves.
A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN LINGERIE LINE
Cue Michelle Cordeiro Grant, CEO of Lively. She has developed and manufactured a line of lingerie that was reflective of the community we live in today and more inclusive. Lively is inclusive and features sizes range from 32A to 40DD. “You know how a Victoria’s Secret bra almost wears you? These bras conform to you. Like your favorite pair of jeans,” says Grant. She’s on to something. Grant has raised $15 million and her first investor, by design, is the manufacturer of her lingerie.
“I DON’T LOOK LIKE CANDACE SWANEPOEL”
Born to Indian immigrant parents, Michelle thought she would grow up to be a doctor or lawyer. But after a stint at Victoria’s Secret, she recognized that the $7B lingerie industry was truly ruled by one brand and one point of view. “I don’t look like Candace Swanepoel,” referring to the svelte size 0 South African model often seen in ads.
